Have Your Say - Health and Social Care Matters
People often say that good health is one of the most important gifts of life. We all want to stay free from illness, live a healthy life and enjoy our independence in our own home. To enable this to happen North Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust (the NHS) and the Council have identified some key priorities over the next five years that will provide the right health and social care services for our growing 50+ population. They want to know if you think they have got it right.
These two organisations will develop a plan which sets out how health and social care services will be provided in the future. This plan needs to address what people want, as well as what services we can afford to provide. Local residents have a real opportunity to shape future service provision by taking part in this consultation.
Pauline Carlile, Cabinet member for Older Peoples Services said "We need to look at our future priorities and this is where residents' views come in. We have set out what we think the key priorities are to improve people's health over the next five years. But we want to know what people think. After all it is their health that we are trying to improve. "
Dr Andrew Furber, North Lincolnshire's Joint Director of Public Health, said "We want to know two things. Firstly, how can we help people make healthy lifestyle choices now so they can enjoy good health in older age? We know that small changes now (stopping smoking, eating healthily, and taking physical activity) will make a big difference to future health. Secondly we need ideas from local residents on how health and social services might need to change, not just over the next few years but also in the longer term to support our growing older population".
The priorities we have identified for the next five years are:
Priorities for next year (2009/10)
- Most smokers say they want to quit and support of the highest quality needs to be accessible, especially in our most deprived areas.
- Other programmes need to be developed to help people stay physically active, eat healthily, achieve a healthy body weight and drink sensibly.
- To reduce heart disease we need to develop a programme of ‘heart health' targeted at people in their 50s and 60s. We especially need to target people living on low incomes, as they are at increased risk of poor health.
Priorities for the next three years (2009/12)
- Services targeted at people living with long term conditions, such as diabetes, heart failure and chronic lung diseases are likely to be important. A large element of this will be developing services to help people to self care at home.
- People clearly want a say in how health and social care services in North Lincolnshire are developed. Building on the success of the Fresh Start project, our services need to find better ways of engaging local people in how our health and social care services are developed.
Priorities for the next five years (2009/14)
- We need to develop new ways of supporting people to live longer in their own homes, which gives people greater choice and control over their care. This means that new services like Supporting People, telecare and direct payments will need to be developed.
What do you think?
- For people living with long term conditions and for older people in North Lincolnshire, have we identified the major factors affecting the future provision of health and social care?
- Have we identified the right priorities for the coming years?
- Are there other priorities that the commissioners of health and social care services should consider?
So how can you have your say?
The Council and the NHS have also produced a leaflet called ‘Finding the Future Together'. This provides more information on why we are asking for your views and has a tear off slip at the end which you can fill in and return by mail.
You can also respond by email. The documents can all be accessed via the Council website at www.northlincs.gov.uk/NorthLincs/Health/JointStrategicNeedsAssessment.htm.

Community Research in 9 wards of North Lincolnshire
Context of the report
These reports detail research over nine Parishes of North Lincolnshire. The research has been commissioned by North Lincolnshire Council and Strong Communities (a sub-group of the Safer Neighbourhoods Board). The purpose of the research is to use participatory research techniques (see below for description) to engage with neighbourhoods to identify:
- What it is like to live in those communities
- what issues affect the well-being of individuals in those communities
- what needs to happen to improve the conditions of life for those living in the area.
The research will be used in a variety of ways, including in the following ways:
- To inform and strengthen the Neighbourhood Action Teams which have been formed to lead on the neighbourhood policing initiative in North Lincolnshire, these structures will also lead on the roll out of the Neighbourhood Management approach, piloted in Crosby and subsequently in the Riddings and Westcliffe areas of Scunthorpe. The North Lincolnshire Strategic Partnership is committed to rolling out this approach and service providers are beginning to restructure their services to reflect this commitment.
- To inform the delivery of the four blocks of the Local Area Agreement.
- To measure progress against the Shared Ambitions contained within the Sustainable Community Strategy and the Local Area Agreement, which are:
- An area that is thriving
- Communities that are confident and caring
- Individuals can see the difference
- Everyone works together for the benefit of the area
- To support the work of Strong Communities
