The items range from small objects such as recycling bins and solar lights through to larger items such as solar panels, wind turbines and even full eco-homes!

Climate change hits bluebell woodlands

Although the bluebell is widespread in Britain, it is globally threatened, with British populations representing 25-49% of the world's total.  The bluebell has suffered through large-scale collection of bulbs for sale, picking and trampling, site destruction and hybridisation with the non-native Spanish bluebells.  Scientists have also identified the bluebell as a species which will struggle to maintain its range in the face of climate change.  During periods of cold weather, spring flowers such as bluebells have often started the process of growth by preparing leaves and flowers in underground bulbs and so can start to grown during the autumn and winter using these stored resources.  With warmer springs, bluebells will lose their 'early start' advantage and be out-competed by temperature sensitive plants which appear earlier than they used to.

Bluebells are a great indicator of ancient woodlands, as they are slow spreading species.  Do you know of any bluebell woodlands locally?  Would you like to help to record these?  I have copies of survey forms and can help with other resources if you would like to do this.  Please get in touch with me at the Community Shop, or send me an e-mail.

It would be really good to build up a comprehensive picture of our local wildlife here in Ibstock and build on the fabulous start made by the Birdnotes (watch out for these in The Graphic).

Netmums survey comment - 'What Does "Green" Mean' survey

The introduction to the Netmums survey results on green lifestyles and choices says "The world had changed in recent years, and what used to be something that just a few of us were concerned about is now relevant to almost all of us - and the survey proved it. 90% believe we should make a difference by changing what we do at home....".

Whilst I agree it is inportant what we do at home, do you get the feeiing sometimes, girls, that that the men are to be found down the pub (or worst still, in Whitehall), talking the inportant talk and leaving us to it, at home?

Is there more than one way women can make a difference to the way the planet's going?
