Care Home Olympics

On the 9 October 2008 we are holding the Inaugural North Lincolnshire Care Home Olympics. The event is being organised in partnership with Fresh Start as part of Life Begins at 50 Month, a celebration of later life. The Olympics will take place on Thursday 9 October at Ancholme Leisure Centre in Brigg between 2pm and 4pm. Care homes can enter teams of six participants. This must be made up of three residents and three members of staff. Please note staff will be expected to take part in the activities. The cost to enter a team is £30. Prizes will be awarded for the teams that finish in first, second and third position.  Each team is also invited to design their own Olympic Flag that will be displayed throughout the event. The flags will be judged and a prize awarded to the winner.

If you wish to take part in the Olympics then please complete the team. The closing date for applications is Friday 19 September 2008. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Transport is available on request.  

National Falls Awareness Day

Winterton Rangers FC, West Street, Winterton will be the venue for an information event on Tuesday 24th June between 2pm and 4pm to mark National Falls Awareness Day.   The Healthy Communities Group who has worked on the reduction of falls among the older generation, is inviting the public to visit and learn more about causes of falls as well as finding out details of support available to keep safe, healthy and active in later life.

There will also be demonstrations of chair based exercises and the increasingly popular New Age Kurling.Local transport within Winterton can be arranged. Further details from Nicki on 01724 733441.

Ashby beginners yoga course

A 6 week yoga course will start at Ashby Community Centre on the 11 January 2008. The sessions will take place on a Friday from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. The course will cost £6. This is paid at the first session. Places are limited so booking is required. Please contact Active Ageing on 01724 297255.

Chair based exercise course

On the 9 January a chair based exercise course is being delivered in North Lincolnshire by Grimsby Institute. The course will last 10 weeks and run every Wednesday afternoon expect half term week. It is aimed at staff working with older people or individuals from the community. The course will be assessed and give you a qualification to lead chair based exercise sessions. Christmas Normanby Hall Tea Dance

Fit and Fine session starts at Epworth Leisure Centre

A new gentle exercise to music class is due to start at Epworth Leisure Centre on Wednesday 7 November. The weekly session will take place between 10am and 11am and cost £3.10 (£2.80 for over 60's). The session has been designed for people over the age of 50 but all ages are welcome.

Scunthorpe gets two new chair based exercise classes

Weekly sessions started at Riddings Drop In at the start of October. The sessions take place on a Monday between 11am and 12pm. Cost £1. A new session is also due to start at Lodge Moors Community Centre on Thursday 29 November. These weekly sessions will take place between 11.30am and 12.30pm and cost £1.   

Life begins at 50 month - Active Ageing Week

Throughout October Fresh Start and its partners are hosting a month of activities celebrating the lifes of people over the age of 50.  Each week will have a different theme. The week beginning the 29 September is Active Ageing week. Below is a list of activities running during that week.

Saturday 29 September - Beginners indoor bowls session (Scunthorpe)

New age kurling comes to Brigg

A weekly new age kurling session is starting in Brigg on the Monday 23 July 2007. The session will take place in St Johns Church Hall on Bigby Road in Brigg from 1pm to 3pm. Cost £1. For more information contact Sarah Wadsworth.

First edition of Active Ageing magazine is available

Copies of the Active Ageing magazine are now available detailing what activities take place in North Lincolnshire to keep you fit and active. Tea dance at Normanby Hall

New age kurling popularity grows

Due to popular demand in April 2007 taster sessions are taking place to introduce more of North Lincolnshire to this fun new sport. The sessions are open to all abilities and age groups.

  • Saturday 28 April 2007 1.30 to 3.30pm at Epworth Leisure Centre

  • Monday 23 April 2007 1 to 4pm at St Johns Church Hall in Brigg

Weekly sessions also take place at:

  • Central Community Centre every Tuesday from 2 to 3pm
  • Lincoln Gardens Community Centre every Friday from 2 to 4pm

Qigong class started at The Lilacs 

A six week qigong class started at The Lilacs on 29 March 2007. The class starts at 1.15pm and anybody is welcome to come and join in. To find out more about qigong click here.
